Our Travels in 2017

It’s hard to believe it’s the end of December already, even harder because we’re travelling right now and I’m having such a relaxing time that it’s hard to keep track of the days of the week. 2017 has been an amazing year for our family with lots of brand new destinations and a few familiar ones as well. We started the year with Paris in Spring, then had a crazy, whirlwind trip to Star Wars Celebration in Orlando over Easter. We had an amazing time with our Summer in Scandinavia trip and we’re currently relaxing in paradise, also known as the South Shore of Maui. And I may even be turning into a beach person!

The kids turned seven and nine this year and their personalities are starting to influence our travels more and more. The Paris trip came about partly because I saw a seat sale which made flying to Paris for spring break cheaper than flying to Hawaii or Florida, but also because of my son’s fascination with France and his insistence that he wanted to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower for his seventh birthday. The Hawaii trip was chosen for my beach loving daughter, and also fit in with plans to meet up with the extended family over the holiday season and the Star Wars trip was for the two hard core fanatics in the family. Scandinavia was mostly my choice, based on my memories of travelling through the region as a backpacker twenty years ago. But every destination had something for the whole family.

So once again I’m looking at all the travelling we’ve done in the past year and having some fun with the numbers. Here’s what I have so far:

Countries Visited: 10 (France, USA, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Sweden)

Flights: 14

Nights on the Road: 53

Hotel: 18

Cruise: 7

Flat/condo: 16

Family: 9

Overnight Flights:3

Southernmost point: Kihei, Maui, 20.8 N

Northernmost point: Helsinki, Finland, 60.2 N

Westernmost point: Kihei, Maui, 156.4 W

Easternmost point: St. Petersburg, Russia, 30.3 E

Favourite Travel Memory:

Mom: I think for me it was a combination of all the amazing destinations we visited in Scandinavia this summer. It’s probably the most family friendly place I’ve ever been. Watching the kids have so much fun while learning new things is the reason we travel as a family.

Dad: Star Wars Celebration Orlando. The chance to experience something with the kids while surrounded by thousands of like minded fans along with the feeling of being a part of something so big and the camaraderie in the crowds.

Daughter: Going to the beach in Hawaii!

Son: Going to the top of the Eiffel Tower. And the beach!

And that was 2017 for us! Not quite as many days on the road as some years, but lots of great destinations and many more planned for 2018. In fact, 2018 is shaping up to be quite an epic year of travel for our family with some pretty amazing plans falling into place, but that’s for another post. For now, I’m going to enjoy every last minute of 2017 and give thanks for my amazing family and friends and the wonderful opportunities we’ve had to see our beautiful world.

Happy New Year and all the best in 2018!
